According to British intelligence, Russia has likely sustained around 950,000 casualties since the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Estimates indicate that in the first four months of 2025, Russian forces could have lost about 160,000 troops. Should this rate continue, 2025 may become the deadliest year for the Russian military, maintaining the trend of high annual losses.
In April, the average daily number of Russian military casualties exceeded 1,200. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the total for the month was approximately 36,000. In March, the average daily figure was even higher – about 1,300.
Although current losses are lower than the peak levels recorded in late 2024 – which surpassed 1,600 daily – they remain among the highest since the war began. British intelligence observes that Russia has failed to convert these substantial losses into meaningful territorial gains.

- On 3 May, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that total Russian combat losses had reached approximately 955,470 personnel.
