A library of publications on architecture, design, and art has been restored in Lviv. This was reported by the press service of the Centre for Architecture, Design, and Urbanism Powder Tower.
The archive contains more than 7,000 copies of publications, the oldest of which are about 200 years old. Among the gems of the collection are an album with drawings and interiors of the Vienna Opera House (1885), one of the oldest originals of the Oxford City and University tourist guide (1893), and an album of engravings by Albrecht Dürer.
The fund has been reorganised and is being launched in a new format — a reading room and research space called Vizariy. It will open at the Powder Tower Centre for Architecture, Design and Urbanism on 20 October. An online catalogue will also be launched at the same time.
‘For visitors, this is a chance to work with materials that are not available online, and for Lviv, it is the emergence of a location dedicated to architecture and urbanism that combines research, education, and public events,’ explains Anhelina Yefimenko, director of the Powder Tower. ‘Vizariy is a new typological unit that characterises this space.’
About the Powder Tower:
- One of the few surviving fortifications in Lviv, located in the very centre of the city. The building dates back to the 16th century.
- In 1959, the tower began to function as the Lviv House of Architects.
- Today, the building is a modern artistic and cultural space, namely the Centre for Architecture, Design and Urbanism.
