British editor Charlotte Higgins to publish book on art and resistance in Ukraine during war

Charlotte Higgins, culture editor at British newspaper The Guardian, has written a book entitled Ukrainian Lessons, which explores the role of art, life and resistance in Ukraine amid full-scale war.

According to Penguin Random House, the book is based on the author's more than twenty years of experience in cultural journalism and three years of reporting trips to Ukraine. It explores the deep connections between war, everyday life and creativity, as well as why culture is something worth fighting for even in times of conflict.

The author recalls that in the autumn of 2022, seven months after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, a trip to Ukraine for a literary festival became a turning point that influenced her further work on the book.

The cover of the publication was designed by Ukrainian artist Serhiy Maydukov, who shared this on social media and expressed his pride in participating in the project.

Ukrainian Lessons will be published in English on 20 August 2026 in paper, electronic and audio formats.

The book explores how art helps to preserve humanity and resilience during war and offers readers a new perspective on Ukrainian culture in the context of conflict.
