The EU could approve a new sanctions package in October, covering Russia’s defence-industrial complex as well as individual and financial sanctions.
This was stated by the President’s Commissioner for Sanctions Policy, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, Ukrinform reports.
“The anti-ballistic sanctions package and the 22nd sanctions package will be closely linked. Why? Because the anti-ballistic one is, in essence, a sanctions package connected to the defence-industrial complex. We hope that, as the European Union has already done twice, an appropriate small sanctions package will be adopted in response to the shelling, primarily linked to manufacturers of Russian ballistic missiles or suppliers of components for them,” Vlasyuk said.
The Commissioner noted that despite the many EU sanctions packages, there are still areas that require new restrictions. Some of these may be included in a separate small sanctions package.
“As for the large 22nd sanctions package, there is an optimistic scenario under which it will be proposed for adoption in mid-to-late October. We’ll see. To be honest, optimistic plans rarely come true in Europe, but I think we will definitely see this major 22nd package this year,” Vlasyuk said.
Discussions are also continuing in the EU about a complete ban on maritime transport services. This depends on volatility in the global market as a result of events in the Strait of Hormuz.
In addition, the EU is considering extending individual sanctions. They want to extend them not for six months, but for 12.
