In Ukraine, it has become common to say that culture is a weapon. But what does that actually mean — is it a metaphor or a reality?

CultHub

On 8 June, as part of the LBTalks event series, participants discussed the challenges facing cultural institutions and the Defence Forces when it comes to the cognitive dimension of the war. They talked about whether the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, the security services, and activists have coordinated their efforts not only to counter Russia’s decades-long influence on the international community, but also to proactively represent Ukraine and its culture to the world. The speakers were:

At the event, CultHub also presented the key achievements of its editorial team during its first year of operation, when the section was led by Kateryna Hladka. In particular, through letters and appeals to the Ministry of Culture, Ukrainian embassies in various countries, and coordination with activists, the initiative helped contribute to the cancellation of international performances by Russian artists who actively support Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Among the cancelled tours were performances by ballerina Svetlana Zakharova, violinist Vadim Repin, and opera singer Anna Netrebko, among others.

During the June 8 event, the new editor of the section, Oksana Mamchenkova, was also introduced.
