At the opening of the “Ukraine in the World” conference, taking place in Lviv on July 8–10, the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies presented the Ukrainian Studies Distinguished Award for the first time.
The purpose of the award is to recognize coalition members and partners whose dedication, academic leadership, and many years of work have made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar studies worldwide.
The laureates were:
- Category “Ukraine Research” – Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute
- Category “Ukrainian Studies: An Interdisciplinary Approach” – European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) and the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (University of Alberta)
- Category “Development of Academic Infrastructure” – Norwegian Network for Ukrainian Studies (UKRAINETT) and the University of Tartu Ukrainian Centre
- Category “Partnership for the Development of Ukrainian Studies” – International Renaissance Foundation
- Category “For Personal Contribution to the Development of Ukrainian Studies” – Professor Rory Finnin, head of the Ukrainian Studies programme at the University of Cambridge.
- Category “Innovative Educational Initiatives” – University of L’Aquila (Italy) and Professor Jürgen Fuchsbauer of the University of Innsbruck.
The Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies is an international initiative launched by Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska in July 2024 during a visit to Washington. The coalition’s main goal is to unite the efforts of universities and research institutions from around the world to deepen the study of Ukraine and advance Ukrainian studies.
The “Ukraine in the World” conference is a new annual event initiated by Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture, the Ukrainian Institute, and the Ukrainian Catholic University in cooperation with the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies and with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation, the Mnozhyna Foundation, and the city of Lviv.
