A mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency has completed another inspection of key substations operated by NEC Ukrenergo that supply power to and transmit output from Ukraine’s nuclear power plants.
During the monitoring, experts assessed the consequences of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, NEC Ukrenergo reported.
The mission paid particular attention to facilities on which the safe operation of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants depends.
Company CEO Vitaliy Zaychenko stressed that the escalation of Russian attacks, including the large-scale use of ballistic weapons, has raised the threat to nuclear safety to a new level.
"Ukraine granted the IAEA mission access to key high-voltage substations in the transmission system so that the international community can see the real level of threats caused by Russian aggression. The world must understand the scale of this danger and take steps to curb the Kremlin’s energy terror," Zaychenko said.
Ukrenergo recalled that comprehensive monitoring of substations became possible after the IAEA mission’s mandate was expanded in September 2024.
The relevant agreement was reached by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the agency’s Director General Rafael Grossi.
As a result, international inspectors can monitor the security situation not only at nuclear power plants, but also at critically important electricity transmission facilities that ensure their stable operation.
