Ukraine’s Defence Procurement Agency DOT has for the first time announced a procurement tender for fibre-optic FPV kamikaze strike drones based on tactical and technical specifications set by the Ministry of Defence.
The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine announced the procurement.
The drones use a fibre-optic cable to maintain a link with the operator.
The Defence Ministry said that, unlike conventional FPV drones, which require a radio signal for control and video transmission, fibre-optic drones do not rely on a radio link. This means they perform significantly better in conditions of active electronic warfare.
“Our defenders will have additional capabilities to disrupt Russian assaults and conduct their own operations by eliminating enemy personnel,” said Yevheniy Khmara.
The ministry noted that fibre-optic drones are particularly important for the military because electronic warfare systems can disrupt conventional FPV drones. Fibre-optic communications bypass these countermeasures, allowing operators to maintain control in situations where radio-controlled drones may lose their connection.
Manufacturers and suppliers can offer their own drones, provided they meet the specified requirements.
Deputy Defence Minister Mstyslav Banik said tender conditions were designed to allow a range of suppliers to participate, including both large companies and medium-sized businesses.
