US President Donald Trump has rejected the need for tougher government regulation of artificial intelligence, despite industry leaders actively warning about potential dangers posed by their own technologies.
“The only control or ‘safeguards’ that artificial intelligence needs is a STRONG AND INTELLIGENT (with a high IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the US has one — indeed, more than enough!”, Trump wrote on Monday on his social network Truth Social, adding: “A SICK conspiracy is being waged against AI and data centres, and the only one happy about it is China.”
Trump’s statement on additional AI regulation came amid calls from industry executives to slow the development of artificial intelligence systems over concerns about the risks they could create.
“We can put safeguards in place, we can do this and that, but I believe there are many negative forces behind it that are fanning this issue,” Trump told journalists on Sunday during a trip to Ireland. “And they (AI sceptics) are raising questions about things that will never happen.”
The US President also noted that he uses AI, but declined to provide further details.
It will be recalled that last week Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said it was necessary to slow the pace of improving new artificial intelligence models due to growing risks to humanity.
Among the main reasons for such a decision, Amodei cited AI’s ability to self-improve and a recent incident in which a group of autonomous AI agents jointly hacked a third-party website. Amodei expressed concern that within 6–12 months similar systems could create large-scale botnets and cause damage running into hundreds of billions of dollars.
The head of Anthropic’s statement was backed by xAI chief Elon Musk. In addition, OpenAI chief Sam Altman also spoke of the possibility of jointly slowing development.
Earlier, more than 1,000 artificial intelligence researchers signed a statement calling for global governments to coordinate on slowing AI development.
