The US State Department has approved a possible sale to the government of Ukraine of equipment to develop and modernise air defence, as well as related equipment and services worth $2.68 billion.
This is stated in a statement by the US State Department.
Ukraine has requested the purchase of a range of air defence equipment: missiles for S-300-type systems, GAM-67 missiles, extended-range laser-guided missile systems, mobile launchers and kits to modify them.
The list also includes RPS 202 radars for counter-drone systems, trailers with telescopic masts, spare parts, software, transport services, as well as engineering, technical and logistical support.
The State Department noted that, if an agreement is concluded, Ukraine would finance the procurement through European contributions and US military financing allocated under the previous administration.
US funds, meanwhile, are to be credited as the US contribution to the Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund.
“This proposed agreement would support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by strengthening Ukraine’s ability to counter current and future threats,” the State Department statement said.
Contractors to fulfil the order will be selected through a competitive process.
At the same time, the list of weapons published by the State Department does not mention Patriot air defence systems or missiles for them.
