Gulf states must join forces to restore stability in the region and help the US and Iran reach agreements.
This was stated by Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani during the Qatar Economic Forum in New York, Bloomberg reports.
The head of government urged the region to act responsibly. According to the prime minister, Qatar, which is one of the key mediators in the conflict, is currently helping to pass messages between the US and Iran.
This week, Gulf leaders plan to meet US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Washington wants to resolve the conflict with Iran and restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz for energy exports.
Al Thani stressed that ending the confrontation will require more peace brokers, and that countries in the region must stop provocateurs.
Meanwhile, Trump said he is open to a possible meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is also due to arrive in New York for the UN session.
- In July, the US attacked Iran for several consecutive days. It shelled civilian infrastructure, including bridges, railway stations and an airport.
- The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, meanwhile, said it had struck US military facilities in Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain. The IRGC later also said it had attacked Qatar. Qatari authorities reported that Iran’s missiles were successfully intercepted. In addition, the IRGC attacked US facilities in Syria, near the border with Jordan.
