NATO has welcomed a security agreement between Greenland, Denmark and the United States, which the parties announced on 18 September. Reuters reports.
A NATO spokesperson said the document would promote security, stability and co-operation in the Arctic region.
According to him, the Alliance will continue working to strengthen security in the Arctic.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on 20 September that the proposed agreement takes the island’s status into account.
“It recognises the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom, as well as the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination,” Nielsen noted.
