Tennis player Coco Gauff said she received a “crazy” amount of racist abuse on social media after her match at the China Open against local player Sun Xinran. The American won 7–5, 6–1 against 16-year-old Sun, who recently claimed the US Open junior title, CBS News reports.
At the end of the first set, during a rally, the advertising boards by the court flickered, and Gauff lost the point and asked for a video review.
After the incident was reviewed, the point was ordered to be replayed, and Gauff won three points to level the score, broke serve and then served for the set, BTU writes.
“At the start of the rally I saw the light flicker, but I wasn’t sure whether it really happened. Before matches we’re told we can carry on and finish the point, and after it ends ask for a review of any moment. Personally, I think that’s the right rule. If I had lost the point, my opponent could have asked for a review as well,” Gauff commented on the decision.
