French President Emmanuel Macron said allies would consider Kyiv’s request for an additional €70bn in financial assistance.
Allies will help raise the funds, France24 reports.
“We will, of course, consider the issue of financing — the financing that will be provided by the countries of the Group of Seven (G7), our partners and, of course, Europeans,” Macron said.
He also reported that Europe is working to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities by providing satellite intelligence data and early-warning systems.
European Council President António Costa said EU leaders had asked the European Commission to prepare a proposal to meet Ukraine’s additional financial needs next year.
- At the European Council meeting, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that in 2027 the cost of the war would rise to €155bn, meaning Ukraine’s need for financial assistance would reach €70bn.
- He suggested using frozen Russian assets as one source of support.
- However, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson later said the EU had not reached an agreement on using frozen Russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine.
