A strong 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Tibetan Plateau in China on Thursday.
According to the US Geological Survey, the epicentre was recorded about 191 kilometres from the city of Nagqu, Bloomberg reports.
Shortly afterwards, another tremor occurred, with a magnitude of 5.2.
China’s authorities have already activated the highest level of emergency response and dispatched a task force to the region. The area around the epicentre is located high in the mountains and has a low population density. According to preliminary information, there have so far been no reports of casualties or major damage.
Experts note that this region is constantly affected by high seismic activity. Since 1900, 29 earthquakes of magnitude above 7.0 have been recorded here, and the most powerful of them occurred in 1950, claiming the lives of more than four thousand people.
