At least three people have been killed by Cyclone Arnab in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, DW reports.
Trees were also uprooted and 31 buildings were damaged.
The cyclone, which made landfall today, continues to move further inland.
After a prolonged passage over land, the storm has lost some of its strength: it was downgraded from a “very severe cyclonic storm” to a “severe cyclonic storm”.
It is expected to weaken further by the evening—to the level of a “cyclonic storm”—and later turn into a “deep depression” (an area of low pressure).
“The areas worst affected by Cyclone Arnab were the northern part of Andhra Pradesh and the southern part of Odisha. Strong winds and heavy rain are being observed in several districts of these two states,” said Narendra Singh Bundel, Inspector General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
The Inspector General also said that almost 40 teams from the agency had been deployed to regions along India’s east coast to deal with the cyclone’s aftermath.
