The German brigade to be stationed in Lithuania will use electronic warfare systems to provide early detection of military activity in Russia’s Kaliningrad region and in Belarus.

This was reported by the head of Germany’s cyber forces, Vice Admiral Thomas Daum, according to Reuters.

The brigade, which will become fully operational next year, will also collect data on transmitters and radar systems used by Russian and Belarusian forces. The information gathered will be entered into electronic warfare databases used by Germany and NATO forces to ensure the timely detection of new radar deployments.

Daum noted that Russia’s hostile actions in Europe are moving into a phase of hybrid influence, where the aim is to cause harm without entering into open armed conflict. In his words, there has long been no genuine peace in cyberspace, even if it is not yet outright war.

Germany’s armed forces are already testing new electronic warfare equipment in Lithuania. This includes drone-detection systems, signal interceptors, jammers and sensors to transmit data to analytical centres.
