The Ministry of Culture has presented a new national typeface, Zakon.

As the the ministry’s press service reported, the typeface was developed for official state communications. It combines contemporary design with the traditions of Ukrainian lettering.

The ministry stressed that creating a home-grown typeface is another step towards decolonising the public sphere, where typefaces of Russian origin are still encountered. Zakon is rooted in the traditions of Ukrainian graphic art and the work of masters Heorhii Narbut, Vasyl Krychevskyi, Yakiv Hnizdovskyi, Robert Lisovskyi, Vasyl Khomenko and Vasyl Chebanyk.

The developers have created three type families for different purposes. The Zakon Text version is intended for everyday administrative paperwork, Zakon Decor for ceremonial inscriptions, and Zakon Letterpress will be used for the originals of regulatory legal acts.

The typeface is currently being tested, so its rollout will be gradual. At the same time, the Zakon Text family is already available for free use and download.
