They will only be able to leave via Russian-controlled territory, then travel on to Belarus, and from Belarus make their way home.

As of the morning of 30 October, 527 residents of occupied Oleshky have said they want to leave for Ukrainian-controlled territory. By 2pm, the Ukrainian side plans to complete medical checks for these citizens, Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said during the government question time.

After the initial examination, the information will be passed to the Ministry of Health. Personal health records will be prepared in order to organise their reception in Ukrainian-controlled territory.

“Next, they will take a complicated route to Belarus. From Belarus they will cross into the customs territory of Ukraine. In Chernihiv and in Kyiv Region, repeat examinations and the provision of medical assistance will take place,” the head of government said.

The citizens will be provided with all essential items, including clothing. They will then be accommodated across Ukraine’s regions — all facilities are already prepared.

Before the full-scale war, more than 25,000 people lived in Oleshky. After the occupation began, counting has become more difficult, but according to preliminary information around 1,700 residents remained there.

Humanitarian Operation in Oleshky

From 27 October, a humanitarian ceasefire regime has been established in occupied Oleshky and the surrounding area. The agreement was reached with the mediation of US First Lady Melania Trump.

An evacuation of civilians is planned in Oleshky. The Russian side will take everyone to territory under its control, but, it is claimed, Ukrainians who want to go to Ukrainian-controlled territory will be able to do so later via Belarus. At first there was no official confirmation of this plan — excerpts of the agreement were published by the Fox News channel.

The ceasefire regime is due to last until 22:59 on 1 November. No violations of the agreement have been recorded.

On 29 October, a Ukrainian delegation travelled to Oleshky.

Oleshky had been under Russian occupation for years, and this year the enemy worsened the humanitarian situation there so severely that people were starving. Ukraine dropped food and essential goods several times by drone. There are reports that the occupiers seized them.

Ukraine asked for the evacuation process to be overseen by the American side.
