The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping failed to overturn, through the courts, the European Union’s ban on its vessels entering docks and locks.
The EU General Court in Luxembourg ruled to uphold the sanctions that prohibit vessels certified in Russia from using maritime docks and canal locks, European Pravda reports, citing EUObserver.
At the same time, the court noted that suspending recognition of the register would be a more appropriate measure than abolishing it entirely.
According to the court, the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping classified 4,207 vessels, of which 3,772 sail under the Russian flag. These include oil tankers, icebreakers, cargo ships and fishing vessels.
The court announced the decision against the backdrop of suspicions about Russia’s involvement in damage to undersea cables near the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard and in the Baltic Sea.
