In Canada, search teams found the body of a 20-year-old woman and confirmed that she and her mother died as a result of an attack. Conservation officers believe several grizzly bears may have been involved in the incident.

This was reported by The Guardian.

Late on Tuesday evening, British Columbia conservation officers said the two women, whose disappearance became known over the weekend, were found near a trail, very close to their home.

Relatives reported the disappearance of art therapist Jenny Balkarras and her daughter, Selah Reid, over the weekend. A family member wrote about them on Facebook. The conservation service later reported a suspected attack, adding that their vehicle was found at the start of a hiking route near Bella Coola. Balkarras’s remains were found first, and Reid was located a day later.

The suspected attack occurred in the Snooka West trail area, about 8 km east of Bella Coola, on the province’s central coast.

Bella Coola, located deep within a fjord on the province’s central coast, is a remote area. Thanks to an abundance of food, grizzly bears are often seen here. The region is also informally known as the Great Bear Rainforest.
