Panteleiev Says Kyiv Sewerage Unlikely to Fail During Power Cuts

Drainage facilities have been supplied with a 16 MW backup. When there is no water supply, there is effectively no wastewater flow either.

When Kyiv’s water supply is cut off, the load on the sewerage system also decreases. The volume of wastewater falls, meaning there is effectively no load on the sewerage system.

Water supply and wastewater disposal are a single system. Acting First Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration Petro Panteleiev said this at a briefing on 5 November.

“It requires backup provision. That project — those 16 MW (the already built backup power supply for water facilities. – Ed.) — was aimed at the most critical facilities of the system you call the sewerage system, that is, the wastewater disposal system,” he said.

  • Earlier, Kyivvodokanal Deputy Director General Serhii Horkutsenko said in an interview with Ekonomichna Pravda that Kyiv’s sewerage system will keep working even when there is no electricity. The wastewater disposal system is being fully connected to backup power, unlike the water supply system, where work is still ongoing.
