President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is counting on stronger US support for Ukraine after the Democratic Party’s victory in the midterm elections to Congress.
He said this in an interview with the German TV channel ZDF.
According to the head of state, during the election campaign the Democrats clearly declared their readiness to help Ukraine and stressed the need to restore ties between Washington and European countries, which have weakened somewhat in recent years.
“I am grateful to the Republicans as well, but the Democrats state very clearly their support for Ukraine, their help for Ukraine. They talk about restoring ties between the US and Europe, which have weakened somewhat in recent years,” Zelenskyy said.
He stressed that without close cooperation between the United States and Europe, it would be difficult to stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The president also expressed hope that the shift in the balance of power in Congress would allow Ukraine to receive more assistance. In his view, increased financial and military support could force the Kremlin to reconsider whether it is worth continuing the war.
“Putin will then think about whether it makes sense to keep fighting if support is growing,” the head of state noted.
He suggested that this could bring the sides closer to negotiations and an end to the war.
- According to preliminary results of the midterm elections, held on 3 November, the Democrats are regaining control of both chambers of the US Congress. As of 5 November, they could win 54 seats in the Senate and 240 in the House of Representatives.
