In Finland, the enforcement service has suspended the seizure of Russian state assets in the country.
The agency made the decision on the basis of a ruling by the Helsinki Court of Appeal. No new seizures will be carried out until the court considers the appeal or issues further instructions, European Pravda reports, citing Helsingin Sanomat.
The operation to seize Russian property has been under way since August 2024 following an application by Ukraine’s state energy company Naftogaz and its subsidiaries. During this time, Russian assets worth more than €40 million have been frozen in Finland.
- In 2024, the Helsinki District Court granted an application by Naftogaz of Ukraine and five other companies in the Naftogaz Group and ordered the seizure of certain assets belonging to Russia in Finland.
- This includes, in particular, real estate and other assets valued at tens of millions of dollars.
- It was the first publicly known successful seizure of assets outside Ukraine to enforce an arbitration award in cases brought by Ukrainian companies against Russia over the expropriation of property in Crimea in 2014.
