Scoop of the day: Ukraine to request extradition of Wagner members

Belarus

Ukraine will ask Belarus to extradite the militants of the Russian private military company Wagner who are suspected of war crimes in Donbas in accordance with all due procedures, the Ukrainian presidential office has said. Consultations with Belarus are underway.

Ukraine and Belarus agreed to step up border security after Russian mercenaries were detained in Belarus.

UIA crash

Negotiations with Iranian officials on compensation for the families of the victims of the UIA plane crash near Tehran have ended in Kyiv. The meeting was attended by members of the Coordination Group from the UK, Afghanistan, Canada, Sweden and Ukraine. The group called on Iran to pay full compensation for the downing of the Ukrainian plane, to conduct an independent investigation into the incident and to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Donbas

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a decree to appoint ex-President Leonid Kravchuk, 86, head of the Ukrainian delegation to the trilateral contact group on Donbas. Kravchuk is expected to "actively explain the decision being taken and approved by the group to the Ukrainian society".

Three servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces have died due to health problems since the start of the 27 July ceasefire, the Joint Forces Operation Command has reported. These are soldiers Artur Bakhnar and Serhiy Verhun, and Sen Srgt Volodymyr Perekrestov.

Russia-backed militants violated the ceasefire twice today, near Orikhove and Novotoshkivske. The shooting was not targeted, the Ukrainian army did not return fire.

Prosecution

Prosecutor-General Iryna Venediktova has appointed former Prosecutor-General Svyatoslav Piskun her unpaid adviser, according to Yuriy Lutsenko.

Economy

Ukraine International Airlines has decided to gradually lay off 900 members of its staff due to the suspension of services as a result of the coronavirus quarantine which inflicted the loss of 60m dollars on the company.

Crime

The Security Service of Ukraine has exposed a number of managers of private companies who organized the mechanism of illegal supply to Russia of military and dual-use goods produced by state defence enterprises.

Coronavirus

By the morning of 30 July, Ukraine has registered a record-high number of new infections, 1,197. Thus the total count has reached 68,794 cases, including 38,154 recoveries and 1,673 deaths.
