Scoop of the weekend: Ukraine loses to England in Euro 2020; combat medic killed in Donbas

The Ukraine team suffered a crushing defeat 0:4 by England in the Euro 2020 quarter-final on 3 July. Upon return to Kyiv, the national team was greeted by a large crowd of supporters waving national flags and chanting words of gratitude.

USA

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has congratulated Joe Biden on US Independence Day. "Sincere congratulations to @Potus and American people on Independence Day! Our countries are united by democratic values & desire for freedom. Our friendship & strategic partnership create a common success story. Grateful to the USA for the unwavering support of Ukraine's sovereignty," he tweeted.

Donbas

Combat medic Capt Yuriy Pysmennyy (Feofan) got killed in Donbas today, according to a Facebook report by the MedStar Medevac First Volunteer Mobile Hospital project. The 93rd Kholodnyy Yar brigade in which he served has confirmed his death from lethal shrapnel wounds.

Belarus

The State Border Service of Ukraine has denied as unsubstantiated Belarusian politicians' allegations about arms smuggling from Ukraine to Belarus. It noted that there were no firearms among the 27 arms items confiscated in the past six months.

The State Border Service also noted that there were no signs of Belarus closing the border, as the media had reported quoting Alyaksandr Lukashenka. Belarusian border guards, however, traditionally tightened security because of Independence Day holidays their country marks on 3 July.

A 24-year-old Ukrainian national, Pavlo Rabeshko, has been detained in the Belarusian city of Stolin, according to the Vyasna human rights centre. His place was searched, his phone confiscated. The man was taken away by law enforcers, possibly to the Pinsk KGB.

Sea Breeze

Ukraine marks Navy Day on 4 July.

Ukraine does not rule out Russian provocations during the joint US-Ukrainian military exercises Sea Breeze 2021 that will last until 10 July, Navy Commander Rear Adm Oleksiy Neyizhpapa has told Radio Liberty. He says the participants have practised certain arrangements for such cases.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has visited USS Ross destroyer taking part in the exercises. He said that this year's Sea Breeze, the largest in its history, is a signal that Ukraine will not be left alone to face Russian aggression.

Security

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has held an anti-terrorist drill based on a scenario under which terrorists took the Israeli ambassador a hostage in a Kyiv synagogue.

According to several sources, Servant of the People MP Yevhen Brahar was allegedly stopped by police while driving under influence.
