Ukrainian MPs warn Russians may be mining farmland

Due to the hostilities, the area under spring crops will be reduced by almost 40 percent.

In many regions of Ukraine there is a threat of mining of agricultural lands by the Russian occupiers. This was reported on the website of the Parliamentary Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy.

"In many key regions there is no physical possibility to start sowing. In addition, in a number of regions of Ukraine there is a threat of mining of agricultural land by the Russian occupiers," the committee said.

Due to the Russian invasion, the total area under spring crops in Ukrainian fields may be reduced by 39%. Losses of winter grain crops may amount to 28%, the Agrarian Committee stressed.

"Every day the occupiers deliberately destroy agricultural machinery. Systematic cases of such actions have been recorded in Brovary district (Kyiv region), Melitopol district (Zaporizhzhya region), Pryluky, Nizhyn, Novgorod-Siversky districts (Chernihiv region), in a number of districts in Kherson and Kharkiv regions."- is said on the website of the committee.

The Russian occupiers destroyed Ukraine's largest frozen storage warehouse in Kyiv region, a bakery in Sumy region, fired on a semi-finished product plant in Mykolayiv region and a Danone Ukraine plant in Kherson region.

"Due to the hostilities, a number of poultry farms have been shut down and de-energized. Birds have been left without food and doomed to extinction. The largest egg producer in Ukraine said that 3 million chickens could die of starvation because the country is at war and feed was not delivered on time," said the Agrarian Committee.

"Russia's daily military aggression is causing devastating damage to agriculture in Ukraine, undermining the food security of the state and the world," the committee said in a statement.

On 14 March 2022 the Chief Directorate of Intelligence announced that Russia was destroying agricultural machinery in Ukraine. Also, the occupiers are massively grabbing agricultural machinery from the civilians to carry out engineering work and build fortifications.
