The general prosecutor of Ukraine, Iryna Venediktova confirmed the establishment of special camps for russian prisoners of war according to the Geneva convention.

She announced it in the interview for BBC.

“Prisoners of war are under the responsibility of recently created enforcement authority, Military law enforcement service” – according to the words of Iryna Venedictova. “All prisoners of war should be kept in special military detention camps and we have provided it. Together with the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Internal Affairs, other related authorities we have signed the dedicated Act.”

To answer the question about special detention places for prisoners of war the General Prosecutor Service has claimed the following: “They exist. We have worked it out. They exist as they are demanded by procedures of the Geneva convention. I want us to be totally transparent. We work according to international humanitarian law, Ukrainian national law and we have not crossed any red lines.”

According to Iryna Venediktova, these prisoners receive medical aid of the same quality as Ukrainian military staff: “That is why I assume Ukraine acts like a civilized country which fights back the aggressor but doesn’t become the aggressor itself”

On the 14th of March the general prosecutor of Ukraine, Iryna Venediktova announced the exchange of prisoners of war which could take place very soon.

Earlier the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated about a large amount of imprisoned russian occupants. According to him, the new authority was created for their detention. The Government has created the Coordinating Headquarters for the treatment of prisoners of war. Iryna Venedictova was placed in charge of this Coordinating Headquarters.
