The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRI) announced the possible reasons for the significant radiation deterioration in the Chernobyl zone and beyond in the near future if the current situation continues.
It concerns not only Ukraine, but also other countries.
“Currently, the automated radiation monitoring system in the Exclusion Zone is not working. There is no data on the current state of radiation pollution in the Exclusion Zone, which makes it impossible to adequately respond to the threat of radiation deterioration in the Exclusion Zone,” – is mentioned in the notification.
In addition, the fire services involved in extinguishing forest fires in the Exclusion Zone are unable to perform their functions.
“Forest fires in the cold season are an atypical phenomenon for the Exclusion Zone. There is a high probability that in the spring and summer the intensity of forest fires in the Exclusion Zone may reach the maximum possible limits, which will lead (in the absence of any fire measures) to almost complete burning of radioactively contaminated forests in the Exclusion Zone and, consequently, to significant radiation deterioration in Ukraine and throughout Europe, ” - the SNRI added.
Earlier, as of 09:00 on March 21, all four operating nuclear power plants of Ukraine were continuing to generate electricity steadily.
Yesterday, at the end of the day, the staff of the Chernobyl NPP was partially rotated and people who were on the territory of the occupied station were evacuated.
