Today, Irpin is 100% controlled by Ukrainian defenders. In the city there are the military, police and special forces.
It is still dangerous in Irpin, because it is shelled from the directions of Bucha and Vorzel. The shelling is carried out in particular by MLRS "Grad", mortars, heavy artillery, partly from tanks and small arms. The mayor of Irpin Oleksandr Markushyn announced this at a briefing at the Ukrainian Media Center.
"But the perimeter is completely under control and there are no Russian invaders. There are still many locals who did not want to leave, and those who remained in the occupied territory - it was 30% of the city," he said.
Water supply is already being partially restored - Kyivvodokanal is helping with this. Energy and gas will be connected over time. Critical infrastructure will be launched when the city becomes safe.
Markushyn added that the Irpinians were also planned to be forcibly taken out, their mobile phones confiscated, and completely searched so that the locals could not report enemy equipment. The invaders also shot dead civilians and rode over the bodies of dead Ukrainians with tanks.
In the battles for Irpin 16 members of territorial defence squads were killed. According to Markushyn, a total of at least 50 people died among the defenders. There is no exact data on civilian casualties. The dead were buried in yards and parks because people were unable to bury them properly due to shelling.
The Russian military attacked Irpin, which is located 5 kilometers from Kiev, from the first days of war. On 27 February, Markushyn said that the attack on the city was repulsed, but the enemy began firing at it from the air. As of last week, the Armed Forces of Ukraine controlled 80% of Irpin. On 26 March, the mayor said that heavy fighting had been going on in the city for several days.
On 28 March, the mayor announced the liberation of the city from invaders. At the same time, it is still dangerous to return there, because the city is under fire, and there are many landmines there.
