Criminal proceedings have been instituted over the discovery of the bodies of tortured civilians in the liberated Trostyanets town of Sumy Oblast, reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
Under the procedural guidance of the Okhtyrka District Prosecutor’s Office, pre-trial investigations are being carried out into violations of the laws and customs of war (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
“According to the results of the investigation, combatants of the Armed Forces of the russian federation, in violation of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons, during the occupation of Trostyanets, abducted and abused civilians. Following the liberation of the city from russians on March 30, two bodies with gunshot wounds were found. The dead were civilians, whose disappearance was reported by relatives a few days earlier,” mentioned in the statement.
The pre-trial investigation in the criminal proceedings was entrusted to the Police Department № 1 (Trostyanets) of the Okhtyrka District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Sumy Region.
“If you have witnessed a war crime committed by russia, record and send evidence to warcrimes.gov.ua,” the Office of the Prosecutor added.
As reported earlier, the Head of Chernihiv Regional State Administration, Vyacheslav Chaus, made a statement that the russian army was leaving Chernihiv region, but warned about no guarantees that air and rocket attacks would discontinue.
