The resolution on recognizing the russian war as genocide against Ukraine was developed together with the representatives of absolutely all Ukrainian agencies; the LB.ua correspondent cites the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Oleksandr Korniienko, at the briefing.

“It is an earnest resolution. It was seriously developed with the representatives of different and all our agencies. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the General Prosecutor’s Office, and law enforcement agencies participated in it. Every word of this resolution is verified. It was very important for us to adopt such a resolution in the Ukrainian parliament. Because due to some of our organizational moments, we sometimes lag with similar resolutions from the parliaments in our brotherly countries, where such decisions were already made. If I am not mistaken, the parliaments of Lithuania and Poland. But it was important for us as a country under this genocide to demonstrate a clear position,” he said.

Korniienko stressed that mass atrocities on the occupied territories, premeditated murders of civilians, creating the conditions for the suffering of the civilian population, and forced migration of adults and children to the territory of the occupier country are all facts of war crimes.

First Deputy Chairman emphasized that many of Ukraine’s international partners have acknowledged the “extermination of Ukrainians just because they are Ukrainians.”

“This is why it is a genocide. We have not found another option; the parliament got involved in this process. However, subtleties and legal details are important in this issue. Because we see that even in Europe, not everyone agrees that this is a genocide. There is a discussion among the colleagues. That is why legal perfection is important here, so to say. In terminology, approaches, phrasing, and so on,” Korniienko said.

Earlier, on April 15, the Verkhovna Rada at the regular session since the beginning of the war, recognized the russian war as genocide against Ukraine. Members of parliament voted for the Resolution on the Statement of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine "On the Genocide in Ukraine by the Russian Federation."
