Chernihiv Region borders on Russia and Belarus. Russian troops came here almost immediately after the war started. The video of the Ukrainian Witness project shows the village of Yahidne, where the inhabitants were driven into a cellar at gunpoint by the occupiers.
Local residents say 138 people lived in a 90-square-metre cellar. They used to go to the toilet in the bucket and slept standing up. Elderly people lived in cellars with 13 people each. The granddaughter of one of the villagers, born a month before the war, was dying in the cellar. Luckily, the little girl was saved.
But there were those who didn't survive. People were dying, but the occupies did not allow to remove their bodies. There are marks of the dead left on the walls.
The russians shot some inhabitants Russians and burned down their houses.
The Russian army stayed in Yahidne from March 5 to April 2. Now Chernihiv Region has returned under Ukraine's control. Journalists receive reports of the region's residents on how the occupation took place.
We would like to remind you that the Ukrainian Witness project was launched by Vitaliy Deynega, head of the Ukrainian army support foundation Come Back Alive.
