More than €1bln of russian assets frozen by Ireland could be confiscated to pay for Ukraine's reconstruction, according to The Irish Times.
This opinion was voiced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland Simon Coveney.
So far, the country has "frozen" €1.2 bln in russian-linked funds under a major EU sanctions regime. The authorities are ready to take the next step and take the funds.
They can also be used to pay bills for humanitarian aid provided by Ireland to Ukrainian refugees.
Coveney also emphasized that sanctions are intended for russia to encourage changes in behavior or policies, not to punish.
The day before the House of Representatives called on the president of the USA to sell the frozen russian actives, and to direct means in support of Ukraine.
Earlier, Jake Sullivan, the US president's national security adviser, said the United States did not want to return to russian oligarchs assets frozen as part of sanctions for russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
