As russia is not ending the war against Ukraine, the European Union must decide to impose the next, seventh package of sanctions against the aggressor country, stated the Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas before the second special meeting of the European Council, Ukrinform reports.
"I am happy that after a long discussion yesterday we finally reached an agreement (on the sixth package of sanctions. - Ed.). But, of course, we must start discussing the seventh package, because things are not going better in Ukraine, the war continues, there is no peace. Ukraine must win this war, and we still haven't done enough for that," she said.
However, Kallas noted, that the new package of sanctions is unlikely to include an embargo on russian gas supplies.
"We briefly discussed this yesterday, but gas is a much more difficult issue than even oil. All the next steps to tighten sanctions will be more difficult. So far, they have only affected russia, but now they also have a negative effect on Europeans. "These things are political. Gas should be in the seventh package, but I have to be realistic. I don't think gas will be there," Kallas said.
As reported, a special meeting of the European Council is underway in Brussels. The participants have already adopted a resolution on Ukraine and agreed to continue to provide our country with comprehensive political, financial, material, humanitarian and military support in the fight against the russian invasion.
Today, the participants of the EU summit will consider issues of energy and global food security related to russia's aggression against Ukraine, as well as ways to strengthen European security and defense.
It will be recalled that the EU has agreed on the sixth package of anti-Russian sanctions, which includes a partial oil embargo.
