The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will not exclude Russia from its membership. This was reported by the Russian edition of RIA Novosti.

The day before, on May 31, Ukraine sent an appeal to the UN to deprive russia of the status of a UNESCO member state due to russia's destruction of Ukraine's cultural heritage. The relevant resolution was proposed by the Verkhovna Rada.

However, UNESCO excludes the possibility of depriving russia of membership in the organization as long as the country is a member of the United Nations. "Every UN member state has the right to join UNESCO in accordance with the UNESCO Charter (Article II). Only UNESCO member states excluded from the United Nations are deprived of membership in UNESCO," the organization said.

It will be recalled that earlier UNESCO refused to hold a June session in the russian city of Kazan, as planned. "It is impossible to hold the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee in Kazan or under the chairmanship of russia until the latter destroys" outstanding universal values "in Ukraine." .

UNESCO is an international specialized agency of the United Nations. At the beginning of 2013, the number of participating countries was 195. In 2017, Israel and the United States announced their withdrawal from the organization. UNESCO's main headquarters are in Paris. Ukraine has been a member of UNESCO since 1958.
