After the end of the war in Ukraine it will not be possible to hold elections immediately, first parliament deputy speaker Oleksandr Korniyenko has said, RBC-Ukraine reports.

He noted that during martial law it is impossible to hold elections, and after the end of the war the way to them will be opened. However, he said, a "transitional period" is needed to hold them.

"After the end of martial law it will be very difficult to hold elections immediately. We need some kind of a small transition period. And it can be different for different territories. For example, if we liberate the territories that have been occupied for a long time - Donetsk, Luhansk, Crimea - it is necessary to find out whose country the citizens are there, to carry out appropriate verification measures. As for the territories that were recently occupied - such as Kherson Region - national elections can be held there," Korniyenko said.

As for the local elections, he said legislative safeguards against collaborators should be put in place.

"Taking into account what we are working on, in particular, with the Council of Europe, we really need a transition period after the end of martial law. We can talk about several months, the term of 4-5 months was mentioned. It is aimed at streamlining the situation with the voter lists. There are a lot of people who went abroad, internally displaced persons, the dead," he said.

According to him, the Central Electoral Commission and relevant international organizations are already developing ideas on how to organize elections abroad for millions of Ukrainians who will still be there.
