President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a phone conversation with his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis on 4 January.

According to Zelenskyy's post on social media, the parties agreed on steps to further develop Ukrainian-Romanian cooperation, primarily in the defence sector.

Also, the presidents discussed the Peace Formula and issues of the bilateral agenda.

The press service of the Romanian President added that during the phone conversation, Iohannis paid considerable attention to the Law "On National Minorities (Communities) of Ukraine", which was recently adopted by the Verkhovna Rada. That document, as stated on the website of the President of Romania, caused outrage both in Romania and among representatives of the Romanian community in Ukraine.

"President Klaus Iohannis suggested that President Zelenskyy quickly find a solution to these problems. In this context, the two presidents agreed that in the near future the foreign ministers of both countries would hold discussions on bilateral solutions to these issues," the press service noted.

Zelenskyy expressed readiness to find solutions for the Romanian community in Ukraine to enjoy the same rights as the Ukrainian community in Romania.

At a meeting on 13 December, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the European integration law on national minorities (communities) of Ukraine. 324 MPs voted for the draft law as a whole.
