Germany has agreed to supply 14 Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine. The German-made tanks will be taken from the Bundeswehr's stockpile, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an emailed statement on Wednesday, Bloomberg reports.
According to it, Germany will also provide the allies with the necessary permission to supply their Leopard 2s to Ukraine.
"This decision is in line with our well-known line of supporting Ukraine to the best of our ability. We are acting in a way that is internationally agreed and coordinated," the German Chancellor said.
The German government website added that the allies aim to quickly assemble two tank battalions for Ukraine. The Germans will provide 14 modernized Leopard 2 A6s, and other European partners will provide Leopard 2s that they have and are ready to transfer.
Ukrainian tankers will be trained in Germany. In addition to training, the package will also include logistics, ammunition, and system maintenance.
