President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine to Oleksandr Matsiyevskyy, who was shot by Russians in captivity after saying "Glory to Ukraine!"
"Today, I have awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine to Oleksandr Matsiyevskyy. A soldier, a man whom all Ukrainians will know. A man who will be remembered forever. For his bravery, for his confidence in Ukraine - and for his 'Glory to Ukraine!'," the president said in his evening address.
Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine established that the Ukrainian serviceman who was shot after saying "Glory to Ukraine!" was a sniper of the 163rd Battalion of the 119th Separate Territorial Defence Brigade of Chernihiv Region, Oleksandr Ihorovych Matsiyevskyy. He was shot on 30 December 2022, and his body was returned home in February 2023.
