Ukraine strongly condemns the coup d'état in the Republic of Niger and closely monitors the further development of events, states Foreign Affairs Ministry.
"We emphasise the need to uphold with the national legislation of Niger and the norms of international law, categorically reject any attempts to forcefully, illegitimately change the constitutional order," the diplomats said.
The ministry stated that political and institutional stability in Niger is a key in the context of efforts to address security challenges in the Central African and Sahel region.
Niger's military announced the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum. Armed soldiers blocked the presidential palace in the capital city Niamey. A group of soldiers announced the coup on national television a few hours after the arrest of the head of state.
Bazoum was supported by US President Joe Biden and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
Niger is one of the poorest countries in Africa. The population is approximately 21.5 million. The head of state is the president, the elections take place every five years.
In February 2023, the EU Military Partnership Mission in Niger (EUMPM Niger) was launched for enabling states to send their troops to Niger to develop the armed forces in order to restrain terrorist groups and protect the locals. Before the announcement of the coup, Estonia was going to send several of its troops to Niger.
