The NATO bloc will support Ukraine until it wins the war against the Russian invaders, stated NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference, Reuters reports.
“It is the Ukrainians, and only the Ukrainians, who can decide when there are conditions in place for negotiations, and who can decide at the negotiating table what is an acceptable solution," Stoltenberg said.
He also added that NATO’s role was to support Ukraine.
"NATO's main message, is, firstly, that NATO's policy is unchanged - we support Ukraine," Stoltenberg emphasised answering a question about possible territorial concessions by Ukraine for NATO membership.
On 15 August, the mass media spread the statement of the chief of staff of the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Stian Jensen, who admitted that Ukraine could become a member of NATO in exchange for giving up some of its territories. At the same time, he added that this decision should be made by Kyiv.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted to this and called such statements to be absolutely unacceptable.
Later, the White House denied the information that there were talks about granting Ukraine NATO membership in exchange for giving up some of its territories.
