The cyber units of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine have conducted another successful special operation on the territory of the Russian Federation - they attacked its tax system.

The intelligence officers hacked one of the well-protected key central servers of the Russian Federal Tax Service, and then more than 2,300 of its regional servers throughout Russia and in the temporarily occupied Crimea. This was reported by the DIU press service.

"As a result of the cyberattack, all servers received malware. At the same time, the Russian IT company Office.ed-it.ru, which served the Russian Federal Tax Service, was attacked in the same way," the statement said.

As a result of the two cyberattacks, the configuration files that have been ensuring the functioning of the extensive tax system of the Russian Federation for years were completely eliminated - the entire database and its backup copies were destroyed.

"Communication between the central office in Moscow and 2,300 Russian territorial departments is paralysed, as well as between the Federal Tax Service and Office.ed-it.ru, which was the tax authorities' data centre (data bank). In fact, we are talking about the complete destruction of the infrastructure of one of the main state bodies of terrorist Russia and numerous related tax data for a long time period," the DIU added.

The Internet traffic of tax data throughout Russia has fallen into the hands of Ukraine's military intelligence.

The DIU added that the Russians have been trying to restore the tax service's work for four days in a row without success. According to experts, the paralysis will last at least a month. It is impossible to fully restore the tax system of the aggressor state.

  • In November, Ukraine's military intelligence conducted a successful sophisticated cyber operation and gained access to classified official documents of the Russian Ministry of Transport's Rosaviatsiya, a structural unit responsible for flight safety and recording all emergencies involving Russian aircraft. The documents obtained as a result of the hacking are a list of daily reports for the whole of Russia for more than a year and a half. According to the data, Russian civil aviation is on the verge of collapse.
  • The report of the hacking of the Russian tax service came on amid the hacker attack on Kyivstar and the failed attack on Monobank. One of the versions currently being investigated by SBU investigators is that Russian special services may be behind the hacker attack on the mobile operator
