Ukraine's year of progress on its way to joining the European Union has shown that politicians have "red lines" associated with a great goal that may be greater than political local interests. However, it should be understood that there are no seven conditions for joining NATO, which were set by Brussels for Ukraine to receive an invitation to the EU.
This was stated by First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Kornienko during the panel discussion "2024: Scenarios for the Country" organised by LB.ua and EFI Group as part of the New Country project. He noted that the invitation to NATO is a political process.
"There is a requirement from our partners that if you want to join NATO, you have to join the EU. It's a very primitive formulation, but it's true. There is no separate track on NATO. There are three sectoral laws in the field of national security, but these are very technical things," he said.
Currently, one of the points that were included in the seven requirements from the EU, as well as in the wishes of the IMF and the World Bank for the next tranche, is the draft law on corporate governance 5599.
"Based on the number five, we can understand that it was registered in 2020. It passed the first reading, and then somehow 2,500 amendments from MPs affiliated with financial groups were added," he said.
Korniyenko added that there will be many bills, including technical ones, which will be difficult for "ordinary MPs" to understand.
"There are a lot of manipulations, media, Facebook, Telegram and so on. We have some changes to the story of the National Securities Commission on the table again - a long acronym, I can't even remember. Honestly, there are three people in the room who know this. Come on. This is very deep stuff, very specific. But we have to figure it out and vote," he said.
