Poll: Over 70% of EU citizens support sanctions against Russia, strengthening the bloc's military capabilities

Six out of ten respondents approve of granting Ukraine the EU candidate status.

72% of EU citizens support economic sanctions against Russia, its companies and individuals, and 70% agree with providing financial support to Ukraine. Six out of ten respondents approve of granting our country EU candidate status and European funding for the procurement and supply of military equipment to Ukraine.

This is evidenced by the data of the Eurobarometer opinion poll.

Almost 87% of respondents support the provision of humanitarian support to people affected by the war, and 83% agree that the EU should accept refugees.

The war in Ukraine is seen in the list of fifteen items as one of the two most important issues facing the European Union - 35% of responses, which is 7 points more than in November 2023. This is followed by immigration (24%), the international situation (22%) and inflation (19%). 

More than three-quarters of Europeans (77%) support a common defence and security policy among EU countries, while more than seven in ten EU citizens (71%) agree that the bloc needs to strengthen its military equipment production capabilities. 

At the same time, 69% of respondents support a common foreign policy among the member states. More than two-thirds of citizens agree that the EU is a place of stability in a turbulent world (67%) and that the EU has sufficient power and tools to protect Europe's economic interests in the global economy (69%).

According to 34%, security and defence are the EU's top priorities in the medium term, followed by climate and environment (30%).
