Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv has become the first Ukrainian university to be included in the world's most titled ranking of academic organizations - the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by the independent Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Education.

KNU has been recognized as one of the world's top thousand universities. It ranks between 901 and 1000.

The ARWU is the oldest of the global rankings, which has a stable methodology based on six research metrics. Universities are ranked according to several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals or are highly cited researchers; papers published in Nature and Science; papers indexed in major citation indices; and the academic performance of the institution per capita. The institution with the highest score receives 100 points, while the rest are rated as a percentage of the highest score.

In total, more than 2,500 academic organizations around the world are evaluated annually, 1,000 of which are included in the ranking.

In 2017, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv was the only Ukrainian higher education institution to be included in the Shanghai Subject Ranking in Mathematics, taking places in the range of 401-500.

"Decades of painstaking and careful work of the university community have transformed into a worthy result that is important for the entire higher education of Ukraine! I am grateful to our defenders for the opportunity to work!" said Volodymyr Buhrov, Rector of the Kyiv National University, reacting to the news on his social media.

Buhrov also thanked the graduates who glorify their Alma Mater with their achievements. These are Oleksandra Matviychuk, a graduate of the Institute of Law, a well-known human rights activist, head of the Center for Civil Liberties (CCL), which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. Also, Maryna Viazovska, a graduate of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the National University of Kyiv, a well-known Ukrainian and Swiss mathematician who won the Fields Prize in 2022.
