The International Criminal Court team, accompanied by prosecutors, inspected the torture chambers set up by the Russian military during the occupation of Kharkiv Region.
This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.
"Brenda J. Hollis, Head of Investigations of International Crimes Committed in Ukraine from the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, together with her team and Yuriy Belousov, Head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed in Armed Conflict of the Office of the Prosecutor General, inspected the torture chambers," the prosecutor's office said.
Spartak Borysenko, Head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed in the Context of Armed Conflict of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office, said that prosecutors, together with other law enforcement officers, had discovered 25 torture chambers in Kharkiv Region.
"The evidence collected shows that the detainees were subjected to torture, physical, psychological and sexual violence. People were hardly fed and given only industrial water to drink. Teeth were cut down, wrists were tied and people's bodies were lifted into the air using a crane with a metal hook, nails were torn out, current was applied through wires tied to different parts of the body, and they were beaten with rubber sticks," he said.
ICC prosecutors are collecting and analysing evidence of torture of civilians in the Region.
"Our fruitful cooperation with the ICC continues. The main focus should be on criminals of all levels for whom there is sufficient evidence to bring them to justice, regardless of rank or position. We are doing everything possible to ensure that criminals are brought to justice. All of them. And it will definitely happen. It's just a matter of time," said Yuriy Belousov.
