Ukraine is reforming high school education: students will be able to choose their own subjects and study profiles. Education after the ninth grade will be divided into two areas: academic and professional.

The first is for those who are going to enter higher education institutions, and the second is for those who would like to acquire skills that will help them start working, explained Mykhaylo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Innovation, Education, Science and Technology.

As for academic education, the Vice Prime Minister said, "training will take place in separate large lyceums where students will choose their main profile and additional subjects regardless of their major. For example, a student of physics will be able to study music or art, and a student of philology - physics in life or the theory of the universe.

Students will continue to study basic subjects, but the reform should give them flexibility in choosing additional subjects and individual courses. Students will have time to prepare for university and learn more about their future profession.

"The vocational direction will allow students to develop skills to quickly enter the labour market. While studying at the vocational school, students will practically master the profession and study subjects that are directly related to their future profession. After graduation, they will be able to immediately enter the labour market with real skills or continue their studies at a higher education institution," Fedorov added.

In 2025, the reform will be launched in pilot lyceums, and then scaled up to other educational institutions. Starting from 2027, students in grades 10-12 will be able to choose a profile depending on their interests.
