Law enforcement officers detained a Russian military intelligence agent who was spying for Russians in ten Regions of Ukraine. The traitor was a 22-year-old resident of Kherson Region, who posed as a military man and travelled around our country under this ‘legend’. This was reported by the Prosecutor General's Office and the SBU.
According to SBU counter-intelligence, the agent operated in Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Mykolayiv, Odesa, Vinnytsya, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad and Chernivtsi Regions.
The offender took turns travelling around the Regions by bus. In each of the Regions, he tried to reconnoiter air defence locations, as well as the coordinates of military hospitals and other medical facilities where Ukrainian soldiers were undergoing inpatient treatment.
For performing hostile tasks, the suspect received a money transfer to his bank card from a representative of the Russian Federation. The intermediary in the transfer of intelligence was a member of an illegal armed group of the so-called DNR.
After completing the agent's tasks, Russians promised to ‘evacuate’ their accomplice to Russia and employ him in the Wagner PMC. According to the case file, the defendant wanted to join this group to fight against Ukraine.
The agent was detained red-handed.
A mobile phone was seized from the detainee, on which he was preparing an agent's ‘report’ and sending it to the Russian group's contacts. The SBU CI has already identified the names of the persons involved.
The SBU investigators served the agent a notice of suspicion under Part 2 Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law).
The offender is in custody without the right to be released on bail. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
