Estonia sends new military aid package to Ukraine

The Estonian Cabinet of Ministers has supported Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur's proposal to send Ukraine another military aid package, which this time includes both equipment and ammunition.

‘Soon it will be 1,000 days since Ukraine was able to defend its freedom from an irresistible aggressor. Ukraine continues to need the help of Estonia and the free world to defend itself. This time, the aid package is assembled from the reserves of our defence forces, taking into account the needs of Ukraine, and yet in such a way that Estonia's defence capability is not affected,’ Pevkur said, according to the press service of the Estonian defence ministry.

The package includes naval uniforms, surveillance devices, sights, ballistic protection equipment and various types of ammunition.

The Estonian Defence Minister added that this is not the last aid package, and in the near future the country will launch a competitive annual programme to support Estonian companies, which will allow Ukraine to receive assistance in the production of Estonian defence products. This will not only support Ukraine, but also the economy and security of Estonia itself.

  • In total, this country has provided Ukraine with military assistance worth more than €500 million, or 1.4% of its gross domestic product (GDP). Estonia is one of the world's top donors of aid as a proportion of population to GDP.
  • Estonia has previously donated missiles to the Javelin anti-tank missile system, howitzers, artillery, anti-tank mines, anti-tank grenade launchers, mortars, vehicles, communications equipment, field hospitals (including in cooperation with Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Iceland), medical supplies, personal protective equipment (helmets, etc.) and dry rations.
  • Also, since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, Estonia has organised training for more than 1,500 Ukrainian defence personnel in Estonia and abroad.
  • In addition, in 2023, an IT coalition was established at the initiative and under the leadership of Estonia and Luxembourg to support the creation of a secure ICT infrastructure that meets NATO standards for the Ukrainian armed forces.
